This is something that may not work for everybody. In fact, I'm not even sure if anyone else will like this at all. But I have been doing this for over an year and I absolutely love it.

Problem: Your alarm ends your sleep like a car crash. You may wake up in the middle of a sleep cycle and be all groggy, you end up hating your alarm sound but you can't do anything about it. You LOVE hitting the snooze button and going back to sleep.

Soft wake-up is based around this idea - that going back to sleep after waking up is a very good feeling.


Solution: Set your alarm up to an hour before you actually have to wake up. If your mobile OS allows you to select a smaller snooze period, you may set it 20 mins or half an hour before. Set the tone to something calm and pleasant to avoid the car crash. [I like the Strum tone in iOS.] Even if the alarm is quiet, you have buffer time to hear it and wake up. Now when the alarm rings, snooze and sleep. I have grown to like the 9-minute snooze on iOS because it gives me enough time to enjoy the going-back-to-sleep phase. You can do this several times and wake up whenever you feel like it instead of being forced out of bed an hour before school/work.

Before anyone suggests that this may be bad for your sleep, keep in mind that your brain rarely (if at all) goes into REM sleep after sleeping for several hours and it is almost constantly in a state of being woken up easily.
